Principal's Message
Welcome to a new and early school year at Westside Global Awareness Magnet School. We are entering the third year of our Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant and things are moving at a rapid pace. We are constantly improving our technological capability to align with the mandate to produce students able to function comfortably in the 21st century; to that end we are creating a media center as part of our project to revitalize the library space, and we’re fine tuning our curriculum from Kindergarten through 8th grade to integrate our global awareness themes of the environment and ecology. Nestled as we are between the ocean and the Ballona Wetlands, our students take advantage of the location by going on structured walking trips, jogging on the beach in PE classes and exploring nature and the environment in the wetlands. We continue to develop the concept of learning in outdoor classrooms using our main garden area and numerous planter boxes around campus. The student garden club maintains the garden under the guidance of teachers with master gardening experience.

Our electives selection for secondary students are all science-based because of the school’s theme, but in our effort to develop well rounded children, we make many opportunities available for students to express themselves artistically. We continue our relationship with Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) ArtSmart program where students work in a variety of media with a variety of materials to create art around social justice themes. The classes culminate in projects that are put on display at the university during the final weeks of school. Every student at the school is taken on a daylong field trip to LMU to view the display and to tour the campus. Otis School of Design also works with our students on art projects designed to beautify the campus. The results of their collaboration are placed on the fences around campus, in the trees, and on planter boxes. PE teacher, Jeff Beard and Data Coach, Deanna Fulton, along with other teacher volunteers, will also train a group of secondary students after school in our Westside Runner’s Club to run and participate in the LA Marathon. They will be looking for parent volunteers.

Our school’s stated mission and the vision that propels us forward is the commitment to prepare all students for the demands of citizenship, college, and careers. As a staff and faculty we keep learning and adjusting to the drastic economic changes around us. Despite the challenges, we’ve continued to increase our level of performance in all academic areas. We are excited about the upcoming year and we look forward to working with you to provide the best educational experience for your child.
