Welcome Parents and Students
I am glad to welcome you back to school for the 2017-2018 school year. We hope that you had an enjoyable summer.
We are pleased to announce that there will be a new Language Arts series of textbooks, practice books, spelling books, and English Language Development textbooks. The series is published by Benchmark Advance. Sone Unit Topics include: Government for the People, Ways Characters Shape Stories, Animal Adaptations, Spending Time and Money. Our goal is to create readers who effectively: make meaning, build knowledge, express understanding, and gain a solid foundation of literacy. We use online websites such as Henry Anker tutorial in Language Arts and Math to build vocabulary and reading skills along with the typing program www.dancemattypingguide.com to teach typing skills.
I give students weekly spelling words list to define and study to submit on Friday. We have a test on Friday. I will send a text message to parents requesting a copy of the spelling list.
We are also starting a new Eureka Math textbook. It will be used along with the My Math textbook. Eureka has a focus on problem solving and building fluency.
Of course the other subjects of Social Studies, Science, Health, and Physical Education will be taught as well. Our secondary teacher here at Westside
Global will be teaching P.E. on Monday of each week. I will handle the other days of P.E. instruction.
Our third grade Westside Global Awareness Theme is: Preserving and Restoring Ecosystems. I have partnered with the Los Angeles Times online lessons pertaining to this theme. Students use chromebooks to log on to read about current events of this nature. There is also another curriculum named, California Education and the Environment Initiative that teaches environmental literacy to students K-12. There is also a correlation to the California Common Core State Standards.
Extra curriculum classes include: visual arts, dance, theater arts, and garden class. They are taught by itinerary teachers coming to our school. In addition students from Loyola Marymount University teaches art on Wednesday.
We are looking forward as always to an exciting year. Please feel free to contact me as needed with information or questions.
